Square Footage: LEASED
This two story brick building was the Cotton Warehouse at Glencoe where they opened and stored cotton bales. We redeveloped this building in 2008-2009 for the Alamance Partnership for Children.
Historic buildings each have unique design challenges. But these challenges give us the opportunity to find creative solutions. In this case, we were not allowed to put railings on the front of the original loading dock. So we found some old carts used by the mill and converted them into planters.
The entire mill complex is build on a hillside, so we always have intersting accessibility issues. Here, we created a walkway to the lower level of the Cotton Warehouse.
This building stood basically unused for over 25 years. When we first visited Glencoe, we would climb up on the loading dock with the help of a cinder block!
The building was nearly complete at this point, although, the site still needed some attention.
The original wall collapsed at some point, and it was replaced with a concrete block wall. The back of the building overlooks the Mill Race.
To adapt this building for office use, we needed to bring more light in. We removed large portions of the concrete block wall to install windows. On this day, they were assembling the supports to hold the roof after the back wall was parially removed.
At this point in construction, the windows had been installed, and the crew was making repairs to the lower portion of the wall.
We incorporated the original columns into the new office floor plan. This was taken before construction began.
This photo was taken before construction began. At this point, debris and leftover junk had been removed from the building.
The upper floor had two sliding wooden doors. These doors remain and can be partially seen through the new glass doors.
The renovated space includes a large kitchen.
This office has a view overlooking the Mill Race.
The exposed decking, brick walls, and original sliding doors recall the original use of this building.
The exposed decking and original columns add character to this workspace.
